Ludzidzini cerca de la capital, Mbabane. Se trata de la tradicional ceremonia “Umhlanga” conocida como el Baile Anual de los juncos. El 6º día de la tradición culmina con el baile frente al rey Mswati III.

Umhlanga es la danza donde cientos de solteras vírgenes suazis se congregan para bailar en frente del Rey de Suazilandia, las mujeres solteras y vírgenes de Suazilandia (África) danzan cargando cañas en la Residencia Real. Las jóvenes tienen edades hasta los veinticinco años,y llevan puestos collares, faldas cortas y largas así como borlas que denotan su disponibilidad para casarse, y la mayoría van desnudas de la cintura para arriba. El Rey puede elegir una doncella para ser su prometida.

La danza del junco o Umhlanga, una de las ceremonias más vistosas de África, volvió como cada año a Swazilandia, única monarquía absoluta que sobrevive hoy en el continente y quizás en el mundo.

 

El Umhlanga es el baile que al menos realizan una vez en su vida miles de mujeres y se convierte en el sueño de no pocas que buscan aquí salir de la pobreza, es para algunos, además de la exótica atracción turística, una imagen de la sumisión de las féminas en este país del sur de África, las cifras estiman que alrededor de 60 mil jóvenes doncellas se concentran en los alrededores de la casa real para el baile tradicional swazi con la ilusión de ser una de las elegidas del Rey.


El festejo, que se extiende por ocho días, ocurre siempre a finales de agosto o comienzos de septiembre en una fecha que escogen los líderes tribales, según la posición de la Luna y las estrellas, ataviadas con ropas que destacan los colores de la bandera nacional, portando machetes, antorchas o escudos guerreros, así como cañas de tres o cuatro metros que ellas mismas recogen.


Las muchachas, todas vírgenes, danzan con sus pechos descubiertos frente al Rey Mswati III, de 49 años, quien sucedió en el trono a su padre Sobhuza II en 1986.


Mswati III podrá elegir entre las aspirantes a la que mejor se mueva como su nueva esposa (la decimoquinta) y tendrá la posibilidad así de aumentar una prole que ya cuenta con 27 descendientes.


Hay reportes de que jóvenes de Sudáfrica también asisten a la celebración y se espera que los jefes de Estado y/o Gobierno que participarán a partir de este martes en la cumbre de países de la Comunidad para el Desarrollo de África Austral, disfruten del evento.
